My Precious Son, Doug

On May 5, 1980, a most wonderful thing happened to me. I was gifted a precious lil boy with huge blue eyes and dark auburn hair. He was not very large at birth - weighing in at 6 pounds, 5 ounces. But, in short time he filled in a big way the hearts of those he came in contact with. His sister, Cindy, immediately fell in love with him and took him as her very own 'baby.' What I had feared early on that she would not understand that the family now had another 'baby' did not materialize to the extent I had been concerned about. In fact, she has never ceased adoring him.

As his mother, I have been proud beyond words that he is my son. I cannot begin to express what having him in my life has meant to me, and still does. Even as a small child, I would call him my 'abuelito' (Spanish for 'grandfather'), because of his constant 'hovering' over my comings and goings. In truth, this pleased me very much and gave me such a boost to know that his love and concern for me was so great.

Now it's my turn to tell him how much I love him with these words from my heart:

"My Shooting Star"

You came into my world

like the warm winds of summer.

From the first I did see you,

I forgot all life's trouble.

You gave my soul consolation

and within a joyous medley.

My babe did beam light into my world

And life since has been a joyous swirl.

In all that I remember,

this I will always see...

Your wonderful smiling face,

that long ago looked up to me.

You will always be my Baby Boy,

even though you are now grown.

The one who sat beside me

and watched Stars Wars until dawn.

As time passed, and other roads were taken,

on wings of dreams my love's been carried.

Lest you feel in some way forsaken.

My love for you, be near or far,

Is as Creator designed it.

Indeed,

You are my Shooting Star.
